Please watch our latest video to hear from members of our local community and our Directors on the benefits a Hydro Electric scheme can bring to the Island of Raasay!

Welcome to Raasay Community Renewables

We are a Community Benefit Society (registration number 8459) set up by the residents of the Isle of Raasay to build and operate two community owned run of river hydro-electric generation schemes which harness the combined potential of the 99KW Inverarish Burn Hydro and the 38KW Mine Burn Hydro.

We are doing this to build a sustainable and green future for our island.

Electricity Generation

Clean Energy

The Raasay Community Renewables schemes are estimated to generate, on average, 520,000kWh of electricity each year.

The CO2 savings will equate to 127 cubic tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

Community Benefit Fund

A green future

Conservative financial projections indicate that the schemes will generate a community benefit payment from 2024 of c£6k rising yearly to c£28k in 2031. The community benefit payments will continue to increase over the 20 years of the financial projections generating significant income which will be invested in community projects.

Developing the schemes has got the community thinking about our impact on the environment and the changes we need to make to safeguard it for future generations.

We are ready to build

All consents have been secured. Planning permission has been granted by Highland Council, a water abstraction licence has been approved by SEPA and Scottish & Southern Electricity (SSE) has signed off on an export licence to enable generated electricity to be sold to the National Grid. Feed in Tariff (FiT) pre-accreditation is underway. Raasay Community Renewables has negotiated 40-year access rights to the land needed for the schemes from Forestry & Land Scotland, Scottish Ministers (the Department) and private landowners.

£307,700 towards the build and grid connection has already been secured through generous grants from the SSE Sustainable Development Fund and Scottish Hydro Electric Community Fund.

We invite you to partner in our project

We are raising an additional £650K to bring the project to completion. Help us reach this target by becoming a member of Raasay Community Renewables.

This is a fantastic opportunity to invest in the island’s future and see a financial return for your support in the years to come.
